IROS 2013-New Horizon
T
he IEEE/RSJ International Conference on Intelligent Robots
and Systems (IROS) was held in
Tokyo, Japan, on 3-8 November
2013. IROS celebrated its 25th anniversary in Tokyo, its founding city, and was
organized around the theme "New
Horizon." A new IROS began, leading
this unique and prestigious conference
toward a new era of intelligent robots
and systems to meet the needs of the
changing times. The conference general
chair was Shigeki Sugano of Waseda
University (FigureĀ 1), and the program
chair was Makoto Kaneko of Osaka University (Figure 2).
Tokyo, the capital of Japan, is one of
the largest cities of the world. It is now
Japan's center for political, economic,
cultural, and various other activities as
well as the origin for the dissemination
of information, making it a great home
for IROS 2013.

More than 1,700 participants (FigureĀ 3) from all over the world attended
the conference, which is a record in
IROS history. A total of 2,094 papers
were submitted to the conference. From
the remarkable number of submissions,
904 papers and 28 workshops and tutorials were selected. The reviews were
carried out by the Conference Paper
Review Board (CPRB), and the Executive Program Committee discussed the
submissions and CPRB recommendations. The papers were presented for
three days of thematic tracks with oral
and video sessions. All accepted papers
were presented in 153 oral sessions
along 13 parallel tracks, while 15 videos
were presented in one video session.
The IROS 2013 program featured
three outstanding plenary talks (Figures
4 and 5) addressing the latest advances
in various fields of intelligent robots and
