RAS Strategic Planning Meeting

T
he application area of robotics
is drastically expanding, and a
wide variety of robotic services
are being launched. The robot
business is changing from a small market of industrial and military robots to a
huge market of home, office, and outdoor field applications for robotics. Robotics was a singular technical curiosity
before, but now it is becoming one of
the most important fundamental technologies in day-to-day activities. Similar to personal computers in the 1980s,
this may be an age of historic revolution
for robotics since the game is completely changing.
The IEEE Robotics and Automation
Society (RAS) strives to be at the center
of this drastic change by promoting innovation through opportunities based
on its 30-year history of leading the science and technology of robotics and automation. Motivated by this perspective,
the RAS Long-Range Planning Committee continued discussions about the
future of RAS. Sixty prominent leaders
assembled in San Francisco in January
2015 for a strategic planning meeting
where they discussed designing action
plans for the future (Figure 1).
Prior to a brainstorming session, an
introduction was given where the goals
of the meeting were outlined and the
current activities and direction of the
IEEE and RAS were shared (Figures 2-4). Participants were then split
into eight groups to brainstorm and discuss the following questions:

how to invite industry into RAS
activities
how to enhance the business/social
leadership of the RAS
how to promote alliances with other
organizations
how to increase membership outside
of academia
how to promote IEEE standardization in robotics
how to engage younger generations
to actively participate in RAS initiatives and leadership
how to increase RAS volunteers and
make their jobs easier
● how to reduce obstructive factors for
volunteer jobs.
As a result of the discussion, the following six plans were developed.
1) Entrepreneurship should be promoted to create and fund new
business.
2) Local IEEE International Conference
on Robotics and Automation events
should be held to invite local
researchers and students to the RAS.
