the Government Forum, major robot-
ics research and development (R&D)
and educational programs supported
by the governments of the United
States, European Union, South Korea,
Japan, Singapore, and Vietnam were
introduced. Policy makers, national
project leaders, and researchers in
robotics R&D programs around the
world came together and discussed
how to have an impact on the exist-
ing and emerging robotics industries.
In the Futurist Forum, globally re-
nowned experts (including Henrik
Christensen and Linda Bernardi)
shared their holistic and interdisci-
plinary views on the impact and
future of robotics, automatization,
AI, and other technologies for the
world of tomorrow.
The Industry Forum was held as a
companion event to the Entrepreneur-
ship Forum and Start-up Contest on
the same day. The forum shared the
ideas and perspectives for the future
development of robotic technologies
of the participants in the start-up
competition and provided insights on
the realization of ideas and commer-
cialization of the products. IROS 2016
also arranged a late-breaking poster
session, which highlighted the re -
search results of over 80 participants.

IEEE Robotics and Automation Soci-
ety (RAS), and Antonio Bicchi, editor-

in-chief of IEEE Robotics and Automation
Letters (RA-L), discussed the RA-L
connection with IROS. As a conse-
quence, papers published in RA-L will
have the option of being presented at
future IROSs.
Special attention was paid to stu-
dents at this year's IROS, with innova-
tive programs targeting them. More
than 100 students received travel awards
sponsored by the RAS, the National
Science Foundation, and IROS. A
newly introduced Doctoral Consor-
tium (Figure 5) was held to provide
mentoring for graduate students. RAS
and RSJ also sponsored several lunches,

such as the RSJ-Intelligent Adaptive
Curiosity Lunch for industry and aca-
demia collaboration, the Society of
Instrument and Control Engineers of
Japan Luncheon Seminar for academic
and industry participants to foster
entrepreneurship in robotics and sys-
tems, the RAS Women in Engineering
Leadership Luncheon to stimulate dis-
cussion on the role of women in robot-
ics and automation, the RAS Lunch
with Leaders to offer the chance to
meet and interact with RAS and indus-
try leaders, and the Young Professionals
Luncheon for attendees in the early
stages of their careers.
