and women who aspire to work in it. It
spans the start-up sector, industry, and
academia and is about creating a global
communication network to empower
everyone to organize local events and
promote the visibility of women. So
far, it is a grassroots self-organized
effort spearheaded by Andra Keay.
The Women in Robotics network
connects individuals around the world
for discussion, coordination, and
inspiration and has a slack channel
where everyone who joins can intro-
duce themselves, seek mentorship,
vent, and advertise events (https://
womeninrobotics.slack.com). Hauert
also moderates a channel, the #good-
news channel, because she thinks the
best way to get more women into robot-
ics is to highlight the positive aspects
and role models.

Women in Robotics has worked
since 2013 to improve the visibility of
women in robotics through the annual
"25  Women in Robotics You Should
Know About" list (http://robohub
.org/25-women-in-robotics-you-need-
to-know-about-2016/). It is not a rank-
ing or a competition but simply a way
to highlight the amazing work that
women are doing in the field.
Good communication skills and
experience are important to increase
the success rate of a project, to draw
the attention of possible stakeholders
(industries, national governments or
regional authorities, and other public
or private funding sources), to attract
potential partners, to gain visibility,
and to enhance one's reputation at
the local, national, and international
level. Additionally, talented students

and researchers can be inspired and
engaged. Hauert is a good example of
proactivity and methodology for
scientific communication.
Being active and passionate about
science communication is a great part
of our activity as scientists and engi-
neers. It is not only a matter related to
the involvement of more girls and
women in science, technology, engi-
neering, and math. Communication
about research projects and innova-
tion should aim to demonstrate the
ways in which science and technology
are contributing to society and ac-
count for public spending by provid-
ing tangible proof that collaborative
research adds value and supports well-
being for all of us.
