variable-stiffness actuators and a solution for soft
grasping that can be combined with a library of
other components. D. Holland et al. present a
radically different approach to soft robotics,
more centered on the design, manufacturing, and
characterization of soft components. They also
provide ideas on how to engage users in contributing to the open project.
A final set of articles uses the open model to
make robotics accessible to a larger audience. In
their article, M. Yip and J. Forsslund present the
design of a low-cost haptic device that is easy to
replicate and modify, still keeping the precision
required by this type of feedback. The article by F.
Mondada et al. also describes an experience of
sharing a robotic device outside the laboratory, in
this case, to reach teachers in K-12 classes. The
presented Thymio robot design decouples a massproduced, open-hardware base with the possibility
to customize the robot with very simple accessories made by children or teachers. The last article,
by C. Vandervelde et al., also targets nonroboticists by developing a do-it-yourself design
approach for social robots. This methodology
allows the exploration of human-robot interaction
solutions by a broader community, faster and with
reduced costs.
We believe that we are at a turning point in the
field of robotics research. The old model of working entirely on expensive commercial hardware
with designs that have remained static for decades
is being supplanted by the availability of hardware
that can be fabricated and customized by the end
user. Furthermore, these designs can be continually improved on and made available to the community, much in the same way that open-source
software is continually refined. While much work
remains to be done to fully realize this dream, we
believe that, as the articles presented in this special issue demonstrate, we are charting a course in
the right direction.
