themselves and their research. These
sessions enabled the students to know
and interact with one another in a semistructured
setting. The other social
component consisted of informal
opportunities to interact during virtual
coffee breaks and lunches, where the
students had access to discussions with
their peers and the lecturers in a comfortable
setting.

Final Evaluation
At the conclusion, we evaluated the
school through an online questionnaire
distributed to the students. The questionnaire
asked the students to rate the
quality of the keynotes, lectures, tutorials,
projects, social networking, and
panel discussion. Students were also
asked to provide comments and suggestions
for future schools. The feedback is
summarized in Figure 6. The keynote
was the most satisfying part for the participants,
with an average score of 9.44
out of 10. The lecture and panel discussion
also got high marks (9 and 8.92,
respectively). Many participants mentioned
that the lectures and panel discussion
were helpful and meaningful.
The social networking received the lowest
score (8.16). Some participants put
forward suggestions for the sessions; for
example, people could be grouped
according to a classification criterion.

Networking
On the final day, we organized a panel
discussion about the challenges and
future of SLAM in deformable environments
(Figure 5). Four of the keynote
speakers, Gamini Dissanayake, José M.
Martínez Montiel, Hongdong Li, and
Shaifali Parashar, were the panelists.
Shoudong Huang was the moderator.
The panel members answered questions
from the students, ranging from technical
challenges of the research topic to
career development advice.
One important component of the
school was social networking every day
after lunch, when the students gave
teasers/poster presentations about their
work to build up a research network
with others. Students were asked to pre122
