An AUV with a data-reactive mission
planner can acquire data more quickly
and reliably than a fixed mission plan
since the reactive planner can keep
the vehicle in the vicinity of, or maneuver relative to, interesting observations. Further toward the autonomy
and capability in mission planning, the
maneuverability of the present stateof-the-art vehicles is often not suited to
successful accomplishment of many of
the desired tasks. An increasing variety
of sensors are becoming available for
use in onboard AUVs, resulting in
enhanced sensing capabilities. This
diversity stimulates an interest in
exploiting AUVs for increasingly complex missions, requiring the vehicles to
function in uncertain, cluttered environments, and to react to changing
conditions. Advances in underwater
navigation, control, and sensor data
processing can lead to quickly deployable, scalable systems with an order of
magnitude increase in the speed of operation, reduction in life-cycle cost, and
increased interoperability over existing
systems. Performance gains jump to a
new level when squads of autonomous vehicles are employed. A squad
is a small group of vehicles with
complementary capabilities that optimally achieve a mission through cooperative behavior.
