Robot Competitions

R

oboCup 2016 was held in
Leipzig, Germany, 30 June-4
July (Figure 1). The IEEE Ro-
botics and Automation Society
(RAS) sponsored a booth at the event
to promote the Society (Figure 2), and
we "sold out" our supply of mem-
bership fliers and hundreds of cop-
ies of IEEE Robotics and Automation
Magazine in a short time. Many young
students asked us, "What is eye-

RoboCup was founded as Pre-
RoboCup at IROS 1996 in Osaka,
Japan, followed by the first RoboCup
competition in Nagoya in conjunc-

tion with the International
Joint Conference on Arti-
ficial Intelligence the follow-
ing year. As a research-
oriented robot competition,
it has suc c essf u l ly hi g h -
lighted the artificial intelligence
re search challenges for soccer-
playing robots, rescue robots, and
home robots among others (Figure 3).
The contributions of RoboCup in
this domain have been significant,
as shown by the number of pub-
lished papers related to soccer and
rescue robotics.
The effectiveness of robot competi-
tions is well recognized-e.g., based on
the FIRST Robotics Competition held
annually in the United States and the
NHK Robot Contest held in Japan. As

the International Aerial
Robotics Competition, spon-
sored by the Association for
Un manned Vehicle Systems
International, have been significant in
promoting drone research since 1991.
RoboCup contributed R&D for the
Quince robots, which were used for
reactor surveillance at the devastated
Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power
plant by providing radiation maps
to guide its cooling shutdown process.
In addition, the U.S. Defense Advanced
Research Projects Agency (DARPA)
Robotics Challenge (DRC), the Euro-
pean Land Robot Trial (ELROB),
and the euRathlon [supported by
the Seventh Framework Program
