New IEEE Robotics and Automation Society
Standards Study Group on Service Robotics

Since the last " Standards " column, the
IEEE Robotics and Automation Society's
(RAS's) Standing Committee for
Standards Activities has approved a
new study group to explore the development
of a service robot standard. This
article describes that study group and
solicits participation from others in the
community who are interested.
The Service Robot Study Group is
committed to the formulation of service
robot-related standards and related
technology research. Nowadays, service
robots, especially home service robots,
have gradually entered people's lives, and
higher requirements have been put forward
for the relevant functions of intelligent
service robots. The study group
plans to propose two possible standards
focusing on the following:
■ a system framework and functional
requirements for mobile service robots
■ the intelligent classification
of home service
robots.
The experts who have
shown interest in joining
the study group are from

Academy of Information
and Communications

in total.

The system framework of mobile service
robots is reflected in the following
components:
■ Basic hardware: This includes
the body, head, arm, gripper,
chassis, etc. for execution; CPU
and GPU for computation; and
storage.

■ User interaction:
This enables th e
robot to interact with
users in the forms
of speech, text, or
a GUI.
■ Task planning: This
component analyzes
and decomposes the
received task instructions,
and, afterward,
it constructs task se -
quences based on
simple actions that
can be executed by
the robot.
■ Motion planning:
This component can
plan the robot arm, chassis, and other
parts to enable the robot to interact
with the environment and other
objects. For example, the arm motion
planner determines an execution path
of spatial 6D poses; the chassis planner
provides paths for given locations
and directions.
■ Environment perception: This component
enables the robot to perceive
and analyze the environment in real
time so that the robot can complete
tasks in an intelligent and flexible
way. This includes but is not limited
to visual perception, force perception,
audio perception, distance perception,
and fusion.
■ Motion control: This component
receives orders from the motion planning,
further processes the data by
actuator controllers, and dispatches
execution orders to drivers.
■ Learning algorithm: This provides a
variety of algorithms for perception,
planning, and control that can improve
the robot's execution efficiency and performance.
This includes the usage of
modern deep learning algorithms, deep
learning frameworks, and the capacity
to train and upgrade algorithms.
■ Safety: This enables safety checking,
failure detection, and related data
recording, which could be a guard
process running parallelly with the
main system. It reads and analyzes
the robot's status to prevent robot
accidents in advance and optimize
robot performance.
■ Resource allocation: This provides CPU
resource allocation for logic-related
