Ton Kalker
Ton Kalker received
his M.S. and Ph.D.
degrees in mathematics from the University of Leiden, The
Netherlands, in 1979
and 1983, respectively. Dr. Kalker is the senior VP of Audio
Engineering at DTS (a subsidiary of
XPERI). Previously, Dr. Kalker was the
VP of security and digital rights management at DTS, where he led the
development of next-generation
immersive audio for cinema. These
efforts resulted in the introduction of
DTS:X for cinema, available in theaters globally. In this role, Dr. Kalker
was (and is) an active participant in the
relevant standardization organizations
[Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers (SMPTE) and ITU],
taking on chair and editor positions
in SMPTE.
Dr. Kalker was previously the VP
of technology at the Huawei Innovation Center, Santa Clara, California,
responsible for setting and driving
strategies for new media technologies. Prior to Huawei, he was a distinguished engineer at Hewlett-Packard,
focusing on media security and content delivery ecosystems. Dr. Kalker
was a technical cochair of DECE
(publicly known as Ultraviolet),
building and standardizing an ecosystem for interoperable online video
delivery. Before joining HewlettPackard, he was a principal researcher
at Philips Electronics, working in the
field of media security, in particular

digital watermarking, robust content
identification, and the interoperability of digital rights managements
systems. He was the technical lead
for the Philips contribution to the
standardization of video watermarking for DVD copy protection. His
technical solution was accepted as
the core technology for the proposed DVD copy protection standard. His work laid the foundation
of the Content Identification business unit of Philips Electronics,
successful in commercializing watermarking and other identification
technologies, and now operating under
the name Civolution as an independent company.
Dr. Kalker is an IEEE Fellow "for

Thomas Marzetta
Thomas Marzetta
received his M.S.
degree in systems engineering from the
University of Pennsylvania in 1973 and his
Ph.D. and S.B. degrees in electrical engineering from the
Massachusetts Institute of Technology in
1978 and 1972, respectively, Currently, he
is Distinguished Industry Professor at the
New York University (NYU) Tandon
School of Engineering in the Electrical
and Computer Engineering Department.
Prof. Marzetta had three industrial
research careers prior to joining NYU:
petroleum exploration at SchlumbergerDoll Research (1978-1987), defense at
Nichols Research Corporation (1987-
1995), and telecommunications at Bell
Labs (1995-2017). At Bell Labs, he
directed the Communications and Statistical Sciences Department within the
former Mathematical Sciences Research
Center, and he was elected a Bell Labs
fellow. He originated massive MIMO,
one of the cornerstones of fifth-generation wireless technology. Prof. Marzetta
is the lead author of the book Fundamentals of Massive MIMO.
Prof. Marzetta was elected IEEE Fellow in 2003, and he received an honorary
doctorate from Linköping University,
Sweden, in 2015. He was on the advisory
board of Massive MIMO for Efficient
Transmission (also known as MAMMOET), an E.U.-sponsored FP7 project,
and was a coordinator of the GreenTouch
Consortium's Large-Scale Antenna
Systems Project. He has received awards
including the IEEE Stephen O. Rice
Prize (2015), the IEEE W.R.G. Baker
Award (2015), and the IEEE Guglielmo
Marconi Prize Paper Award (2013).
Prof. Marzetta's lecture topics
include massive MIMO: it really works!;
from Armstrong, through Shannon, to
massive MIMO: 100 years of wireless
technological progress; and a network
optimization problem in the year 1879.
