He also serves on the IEEE Press
Board (2015-2018) and as an asso-
ciate editor (AE) for IEEE Transactions on Human-Machine Systems,
IEEE Transactions on Affective
Computing, IEEE Sensors Journal,
and IEEE Access. He is currently
the chair of the Italian Chapter of
SMCS and the founding cochair of
the SMCS Technical Committee on
Interactive and Wearable Computing
and Devices. He is a member-at-large
of the SMCS Board of Governors
(2018-2020).
Fortino is very active in the organi-
zation of conferences/workshops/spe-
cial sessions (80 plus) and special is-
sues (35 plus). He was the general chair
of the IEEE International Conference
on Computer Supported Cooperative
Work in Design 2015 and the IEEE In-
ternational Conference on Network-
ing, Sensing and Control 2017, and he
is the coordinating technical chair for
IEEE SMC 2019 to be held in Bari, Italy.
He organized special issues of IEEE
Sensors Journal, IEEE Transactions
on Human-Machine Systems, IEEE
Transactions on Automation Science
and Engineering, IEEE Access, and
IEEE Transactions on Services Computing. He is the cochair of the SMC
conference special sessions on Col-
laborative Wireless Sensor Networks
(since 2011) and Interactive and Wear-
able Computing and Devices (since
2016). Notably, he has been a technical
program committee member of ap-
proximately 150 IEEE conferences.
He is also active outside of the
IEEE as the founding editor of the
Springer Book Series "Internet of
Things: Technology, Communications
and Computing" and serving as AE for
Journal of Network and Computer Applications, Engineering Applications
of Artificial Intelligence, Information
Fusion, and other journals published
by Elsevier and Springer. He is a mem-
ber of the Association for Computing
Machinery and the International Fed-
eration of Automatic Control.
Apart from contributing broadly
and internationally to the research
field for many years, Fortino is active

in technology transfer and business
activities. In 2010, he founded and
currently is the chief executive of-
ficer of SenSysCal S.r.l., a spinoff of
the University of Calabria, develop-
ing innovative IoT-based systems for
e-health, domotics, and smart cities.
Since 2002, he has promoted the es-
tablishment of many (50 plus) teach-
ing/research agreements between
the University of Calabria and inter-
national universities and research
centers from all over the world, and
currently he is the international rela-
tions administrator responsible for
his DIMES department.
David Mendonça
David Mendonça is an
associate professor in
the Industrial and Sys-
tems Engineering De-
partment at Rensse-
laer Polytechnic Insti-
tute (RPI) in Troy, New York, where he
also holds an appointment in the Cog-
nitive Science Department. He recent-
ly completed a two-year term as a pro-
gram officer in the Engineering Direc-
torate of the U.S. National Science
Foundation (NSF). At the NSF, he
directed and codirected programs at
the intersection of engineered and
human systems and participated in
various multiagency federal commit-
tees in the hazards and disasters
domains. He has published extensively
in the fields of industrial engineering
and applied computing, with a focus
on computer-based support for human
cognition in high-stakes decision
making. His work has been funded
through grants from the NSF (includ-
ing a 2005 CAREER award) and
involved numerous national and inter-
national collaborations.
Mendonça is a Senior Member of
the IEEE. During 2013-2016, he was
an AE of IEEE Transactions on Human-Machine Systems. He has or-
ganized numerous sessions for the
SMC main conference. He has served
as cochair of SMC's Technical Com-
mittee on Homeland Security and as
a member of SMC's Conferences and
Meetings Committee. His work has

been published in IEEE Transactions
on Human-Machine Systems and its
predecessor, IEEE Transactions on
Systems, Man, and Cybernetics, as
well as in the SMC conference pro-
ceedings. In addition to the IEEE,
he is a member of the Institute for
Operations Research and Manage-
ment Sciences, the Cognitive Science
Society, and the Human Factors and
Ergonomics Society. He has served
in both organizing and program com-
mittee capacities for a wide variety of
engineering and applied-computing
conferences throughout his career.
Mendonça holds a Ph.D. degree from
RPI; an M.S. degree from Carnegie
Mellon University, Pittsburgh, Pennsyl-
vania; and a B.A. degree from the Uni-
versity of Massachusetts at Amherst.
Tadahiko Murata

earned his Ph.D. de -
gree in 1997 from
Osaka Prefecture Uni-
versity, Sakai, Japan,
reducing a three-year
course to one year. He started his aca-
demic career at Ashikaga Institute of
Technology, Japan, in 1997 and then
became an associate professor at Kan-
sai University, Suita, Japan, in 2001.
Since 2009, he has been a professor at
Kansai University. He established the
Policy Grid Computing Laboratory
with matching funds from Kansai Uni-
versity and the Japanese government
from 2005 to 2010. He was a visiting
scholar of the Computational Institute
at the University of Chicago, Illinois,
from 2010 to 2011.
Murata has more than 20 years of
experience in leading research in ar-
tificial intelligence. His research has
been continually supported by Japa-
nese national funds since 1998. He has
acted as a program committee mem-
ber for a number of international con-
ferences, such as the SMCS annual
conference, the IEEE Conference on
Evolutionary Computation, and the
Genetic and Evolutionary Computa-
tion Conference. From 2004 to 2008,
he was a chair of the SMCS Technical
