IEEE Systems, Man and Cybernetics Magazine - July 2018 - 31

I have no doubt that collaboration with Prof. Shi will lead
to many successes.
Ramesh Agarwal, Washington University,
St. Louis
It has been a great honor and privilege for me to have been
associated with a scientist/engineer of Prof. Shi's stature. I
have collaborated with him for more than 20 years on con-
trol theory and its wide-ranging applications. He is one of
the world's foremost authorities on all aspects of Markov-
ian jump systems. We have worked on H-infinity and slid-
ing mode control of Markovian/stochastic continuous and
discrete jump systems without and with time delay, as well
as in other areas including control and filter design of
fuzzy systems and neuro-computing. Prof. Shi has been
recognized as a highly cited researcher for the past five
years because of his exceptionally high impact publica-
tions in IEEE transactions and other leading journals on
control theory. His depth and breadth of contributions and
productivity are astounding. It is also important to add
that, in spite of his extraordinary accomplishments, Prof.
Shi is a very humble, easily approachable, and friendly gen-
tleman to his students and colleagues. It is my utmost plea-
sure to be able to share my association with Prof. Shi and
honor his contributions.
Xiaojie Su, Chongqing University, China
My collaboration with Prof. Shi started 10 years ago when
he was my Ph.D. degree supervisor. He is a neat, accurate
person of patience and agreeable character, who is inargu-
ably a great scientist, excellent organizer, and good supervi-
sor at Harbin Institute of Technology, China. In the time I
have known him, he has given me wise advice and strong
support in my work. When we first started our collabora-
tion, my research focused on the analysis and optimal syn-
thesis for fuzzy systems. Prof. Shi is an expert in this
domain and has made many significant contributions on
this topic. Under his supervision, my challenges were
solved, and I gained many fresh ideas. Dr. Shi was a consid-
erable help, and his rigorous mathematical proof, novel
transformations, and thorough descriptions have had subtle
impacts on my entire Ph.D. degree study. Not surprisingly,
we often quickly found topics and authored papers together,
some of which have been published in leading international
journals, such as Automatica and IEEE transactions.
Lately, we have continued to collaborate on fuzzy con-
trol, switched systems, and sliding mode control and pub-
lished some nice work together. Specifically, we solved
some filtering problems for nonlinear switched stochastic
systems and did model approximation problems for fuzzy
switched systems. We recently contributed some new
results concerning the event-triggered control problem of
dynamic complex systems and published several papers in
high-quality journals in this area.
Prof. Shi has always been very helpful during our joint
research work. If issues occur, he is quick to resolve them

with clear answers or novel indications, which consider-
ably increases the confidence of the whole team. That con-
fidence motivates the team by reassuring us that we can
conquer even the most challenging problems. His patient
and rigorous scientific attitude toward academic research
has affected me deeply.
Qikun Shen, Yangzhou University, China
Not only is Prof. Shi a famous scientist, he is also a very
good colleague and person. In 2013, it was my pleasure to
meet him at Nanjing University of Aeronautics and Astro-
nautics, China. From that time on, he was generous with
his guidance and help during our collaborations on various
topics, including fault tolerant control, fault diagnosis,
fuzzy control, neural network control, distributed control,
consensus, cooperative control, and adaptive control.
Under his supervision, we have copublished approximately
20 papers in IEEE transactions and other internationally
known academic journals.
Shunyi Zhao, Jiangnan University, China
I first met Prof. Shi when I was a Ph.D. degree student at
Jiangnan University in Wuxi, China. At that time, my
research topic was on state estimation for Markov jump
systems. As an expert in this area, Prof. Shi has made
many significant contributions on this topic. Reading his
research papers assisted me in solving challenges and
helped spark many new ideas. During the last year of my
Ph.D. degree study, I had the opportunity to talk with Dr.
Shi at an international conference, where he was invited as
a keynote speaker. As time has gone by, most of the details
of that conversation have been blurred in my mind, but I
clearly remember the conversation being one of great
empathy as are the exciting ideas offered by Prof. Shi.
We had more opportunities to collaborate on finite
impulse response filter design and have published some
nice work together. Specifically, we performed filtering
fusion work to achieve better robustness against uncertain-
ties than the existing methods and proposed a real-time fil-
ter for industrial applications with the purpose of fast
operations. Recently, we discovered some new outcomes
relating to the state estimation problem of Markov jump
systems with better accuracy, which have been submitted
to a high-quality journal. Prof. Shi has always been very
helpful during our joint research work. What is more
impressive is that Prof. Shi supports young researchers in
many different ways, not just in research but in life. That
quality is important, especially for a leader of a team.
Michael V. Basin, Autonomous University of
Nuevo Leon, Mexico; ITMO University, Russia
My collaboration with Prof. Shi started in 2004 when he invit-
ed me to join the editorial board of the then newly organized
International Journal of Innovative Computing, Informa-
tion, and Control. We first met in person during the Interna-
tional Federation of Automatic Control World Congress in
Ju ly 2018
