IEEE Systems, Man and Cybernetics Magazine - January 2020 - 55
of vision and initiatives, a kind person and a very good friend of mine.
We have spent many times together
at BoG meetings and social events. I
always enjoyed his cheerful anecdotes
to enliven these friendly meetings and
in our personal conversations, too. Mo
left not only his wife, Ferial, and his
children but SMCS as his second family as well. We, such family members,
will keep his memory.
-Imre J. Rudas
President
IEEE SMCS
Mo was held in highest regard as a
friend and distinguished colleague
by all fellow members of the IEEE
SMCS BoG, both current and past,
as well as by many Society members
and the broader IEEE family. Our
mutual colleague, Prof. Keith Hipel,
expressed our collective feelings in
a most fitting form of expression,
declaring, "Mo added a spirit of
collegiality, wit, good humor, friendliness, and philosophical conversation to our Society meetings that is
going to be greatly missed." Mo was
a pleasure to work with, and it was
always a privilege to be in his company. He always had an interesting,
and often entertaining, story to tell
to enrich any conversation-a sign of
a rich life experience and the learned
intellect of a well-rounded scholar.
-Edward Tunstel
Junior Past President
IEEE SMCS
I have known Mo for more than
10 years as a colleague, a fellow
SMCS leader, and a friend. He was
like family, and I often called him
"Uncle Mo," as he was a very genuine and caring person. Mo was very
passionate about the SMCS and his
roles as one of its leaders. He has
been instrumental in many initiatives, but the eNewsletter and IEEE
Systems, Man, and Cybernetics Magazine are his latest contributions to
the SMCS family.
One of the most memorable moments I had with Uncle Mo was in
Hungary during the [IEEE SMC 2016]
BoG dinner. As he was sitting right
across from me at the same table, we
talked about our families. I still remember him saying, "No matter what
you do in your career, it will not matter if you do not spend enough time
and enjoy your family." Of course, this
was the beginning of another joyful
conversation like those I always had
with Uncle Mo and Ferial El-Hawary.
Having two children and seeing them
grow toward adulthood, I understand
Uncle Mo's point more and more every
day. As a great friend, role model, and
fellow SMCS leader, I will miss him
greatly. His genuine smile and passion
for the SMCS will always be in my
memories. Rest in peace, Uncle Mo.
-Ferat Sahin
Vice President Finance
IEEE SMCS
I met Mo five or six years ago. He
was always kind and cordial with
me and helped me and supported
my activity in our SMCS. I have
observed his phenomenal work as
the EIC of IEEE Systems, Man, and
Cybernetics Magazine during the
last years, always looking for the
best way to increase the quality of
the magazine, always receptive to
collaboration, always working for
our Society in an unbiased way.
In short, we have lost a great person and a good academic. Mo will
always be in our memory.
-Enrique Herrera-Viedma
Vice President for Publications
IEEE SMCS
I will remember Mo as one of the kindest and upright colleagues I ever met.
He was a very warm-hearted, supportive, and still-determined person that
followed his ideals despite criticisms
and obstacles in his way. It was a pleasure to work with him, and even if
someone did not agree, he was able
to achieve a common ground. That's a
very rare character trait, which made
him a good researcher and colleague.
-Andreas Nuernberger
Vice President Conferences
and Meetings
IEEE SMCS
Ja nu a r y 2020
I cannot remember the first time I met
Mo but it was definitely at one of our
annual SMC conferences. With his
help and guidance, I obtained opportunities to serve in leadership positions of our SMC annual conferences
and many others. Twice I received the
Outstanding Contribution Award
and Norbert Wiener Award from our
SMCS and have become a highly cited
scholar worldwide.
As an outstanding technical leader, Mo demonstrated his wonderful
leadership skills and made enormous
contributions to our professional
communities. Among numerous positions, he served as the editor-incharge of the IEEE Press Series on
Power Engineering, which is the most
successful among all book series
published by the IEEE Press/Wiley.
He very kindly and actively promoted
and encouraged young researchers
in their career growth. He was a role
model for all of us to follow. Mo lives
in my mind forever.
-Mengchu Zhou
Former Vice President
Conferences and Meetings
IEEE SMCS
I have known Mo since my involvement with the SMCS in the 1980s; he
is an inspirational model of professional service and has inspired me
to spend time and effort building
and contributing to our professional
organizations. I regret not yet fulfilling my promises to Mo: visiting his
home country, writing a book on
parallel systems for his IEEE/Wiley
series, and submitting an article on
parallel cybernetics to IEEE Systems, Man, and Cybernetics Magazine, but I will do so as soon as I
can. Mo, we all miss you and thank
you for your great contributions to
our community!
-Fei-Yue Wang
Vice President Human-Machine
Systems
IEEE SMCS
I got to know Mo through my involvement with the IEEE Press Board
back in 2008. I always enjoyed his
