T
he Internet of Things (IoT) is
on the frontier of the information
industry. The abundant
availability of sensing and
communication equipment and the
introduction of intelligent monitoring
systems have created the
foundation for and fueled the rapid
growth of IoT applications in different
fields. Novel IoT technologies
have introduced data-driven expert
systems for operating and monitoring
power systems. The main purpose
is to ensure overall system
robustness, stability, and optimality.
In this issue of IEEE Systems,
Man, and Cybernetics Magazine, we
present three articles related to the
important and fast-evolving topic
of power IoT and its application in
different domains. The article " SelfOrganizing
Software Models for the
Internet of Things " introduces a novel
framework, called self-organizing
software models, in which IoT software
systems are not explicitly programmed
but emerge in a decentralized
manner during system operation.
This key motivation for the introduction
of this paradigm is to automate
the process of constructing large,
complex, and dynamic IoT systems
with any manual involvement.
The article " Virtual Microgrid Management
via Software-Defined Energy
Network for Electricity Sharing " proposes
a framework based on a logical
association of spatially distributed
elements, as an approach to building a
virtual microgrid, operated as a softDigital

ware-defined energy network. This
novel framework presumes that the
electrical energy sharing is enabled
in the cyber domain by handshakes
inspired by resource allocation methods
utilized in peer-to-peer Internet
applications. Reducing the complexity
and guaranteeing energy access to
all the virtual grid members are key
benefits of the proposed solution.
A novel framework for improving
the performance of the load frequency
