he 2020 IEEE International
Conference on Systems,
Man, and Cybernetics (SMC
2020 IEEE
2020) was held as a virtual event
due to pandemic conditions. SMC
2020's technical program covered
the three technical areas of the
IEEE Systems, Man, and Cybernetics
Society (SMCS), with papers and
presentations that promoted communications
and discussions among
researchers, students, and professionals
from industry. The main
theme of SMC 2020 was " HumanCentered
Systems for Smart and
Connected Communities and Infrastructures, "
which provided interactions
and discussions while
promoting research, innovations,
and technology deployment toward
connected communities.
Papers included topics such as
autonomous systems, intelligent control,
modern information and communication
technologies, the Internet
of Things, big data, cloud computing,
and innovative and promising
applications in the automation and
process industries. SMC 2020 received
1,116 submissions, including
regular and special session papers;
from these, 689 papers were accepted
and appeared in the conference proceedings,
which included 151 regular
and special sessions.
The conference program began
on Sunday, 11 October 2020, with
three tutorials and four workshops.
The four-day program included
three keynote talks and two panel

The program also included a joint

sessions. Prof. Larry Hall delivered
the keynote talk " Explorations in
Big Data and Small Data With Deep
Learning, " which showed advanced
deep learning techniques to support
data analytics. Prof. Nadia Magnenat
Thalmann presented the talk " Humanoid
Social Robots: What's New
and What's Next?, " where robots are
adopted in social communications.
Dr. Grady Booch's talk, " What Does It
Mean to Be Human?, " focused on key
features and functions of humans
that have inspired artificial intelligence
and applications.
International Council on Systems Engineering/SMCS
panel, " The Future of
Systems Engineering, " and the SMCS
Founders' Forum. The SMCS Women
in Engineering and Young Professionals
hosted their traditional luncheon
event virtually this year. The conference
included two sessions for the
presentation of candidates for the
Best Conference Paper Award and the
Best Student Paper Award.
SMC 2020 hosted the 10th Workshop
on Brain-Machine Interface
Systems, which included both regular
and special sessions. A Brain-Computer
Interface Hackathon was held
on 11-12 October 2020.
The general chair was Hossam A.
Gabbar (Figure 1). The program cochairs
were Kazuo Kiguchi, Vladimir
Marik, and Andreas Nürnberger. The
technical program cochairs, associate
editors, and reviewers exerted
extraordinary efforts to manage the
paper review process while maintaining
the high quality of conference
publications.
