Reflections

A

As another year closes, my term as
your president comes to an end, and
it leads me to first and foremost
express my thanks for the honor of
serving for the past two years in this
capacity. The IEEE Solid-State Circuits Society (SSCS) has, and continues to have, a profound impact on
my career-both professionally and
personally through the people I have
met and worked with. The SSCS is
one of the strongest Societies in the
IEEE, with strong conferences, publications, Chapter activities, as well
as financial resources. Our membership of 10,000 people represents a
broad spectrum of individuals working in the field of solid state, from
30+ years in the career to those just
entering-and both groups should
find the technical and professional
aspects of the Society as key benefits to their careers as well.
As I look back over the past two
years, we've made a number of strides:
■ increasing the number of Distinguished Lecturer tours throughout the globe
■ maintaining our world leadership
conference offerings from ISSCC
and CICC in the United States, to
VLSI Symposium A-SSCC in Asia, to

ESSCIRC in Europe-these conferences represent the leading forum
for publications in our field and
are the best place to meet fellow
researchers and stay current on the
latest technology developments
continued IEEE Journal of SolidState Circuits in its leading role
for our technical publications as
well as adding the virtual journals in RFIC as well as JxCDC,
describing cutting-edge technologies beyond CMOS

Increased collaboration with our
sister Societies in Division 1, the
IEEE Circuits and Systems and IEEE
Electron Devices Societies; you'll
see some special offerings this year
when you renew your membership
in adding one or more of these societies to your subscription, and we
intend to increase these cross-Society offerings
acknowledged a number of our
long-term members of five and 15
years, our most important asset

successfully reviewed our publications and Society as a whole at the
IEEE level with strong positive results
■ developed a strategic plan for the
next five to ten years that focuses
on both continuing our technical
leadership while continuing to demonstrate operational excellence
■ most importantly, focusing on delivering value to our members. We're
reducing our membership fees this
year to US$25, and I'd argue this
is the best investment possible in
your career. We've made member
value a touchstone for our efforts,
and I can assure you that a short
note to myself or any member of
the Administrative Committee will
be taken quite seriously. So if you
have ideas, suggestions of ways to
improve, or would like to volunteer
in working for the Society, YOUR Society, let us know.
As my term as president draws to a
close, I'm even more excited by our
incoming president, Prof. Jan Van der
Spiegel. Jan has been one of the founding drivers in our Society, having grown
our Chapters from zero to 100 during
his tenure. As a professor at the University of Pennsylvania, he cares deeply
about both our technology and education in general and our Society members in particular. The SSCS is in strong
hands with Jan at the helm.
