SSCS-Singapore Holds Distinguished Lecture
on Enabling and Exploiting
Machine Learning in Ultra-Low-Power Devices by Prof. Naveen Verma

The IEEE Solid-State Circuits Society
(SSCS) Singapore Chapter, jointly
with the Institute for Microelectronics
of Agency for Science, Technology and
Research (IME, A*STAR), held a Distinguished Lecture by Prof. Naveen
Verma from Princeton University,
New Jersey. The lecture, "Enabling
and Exploiting Machine Learning in
Ultra-Low-Power Devices," was presented on 7 August 2017 in the Fusionopolis high-tech campus, attended by
50 participants.
Verma motivated the topic, with
the emerging concept of enabling
natural interaction between us and
our environment. He briefly mentioned the hybrid large-area electronic systems being developed
in his lab toward this goal. Verma
then delved into the main topic of his
lecture, which presents cross-layer
techniques to design ultra-low-power
ICs for intelligent sensing and data
processing applications. First, on the
enabling aspect, machine learning
and artificial intelligence algorithms
are playing an ever-more increasing
role in sensing applications, and the
computationally intensive nature
of these algorithms calls for ultralow-power circuit design techniques
during their implementation. Second,
on the exploiting aspect, by understanding these algorithms that are
dat a- dr iven, we can develop new
circuits that take advantage of such
data-driven properties to compensate for (analog) imperfections in the
hardware system, i.e., sensor imperfections/faults, or nonideal properties in the analog part of the system.

machine-learning training phase on
the nonideal system as opposed to
