Assessing recruiting sources, job ad
language, physical office space, and
décor is also important.
Companies should not expect that
these changes will occur overnight.
Reforming business processes takes
time, but the rewards are well worth it.
Innovation will be enriched, products
and services will address a wider range
of customer needs, talent pools will be
enlarged, and decision-making will be
more robust. Everybody in the company will benefit because, when corporate cultures are improved for one
group, everyone benefits (Figure 5).

About the Authors
Terri S. Fiez is the vice chancellor
for research and innovation at the
University of Colorado, Boulder. Prior
to September 2015, she was head of
the School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at Oregon
State University, Corvallis. In 2008-
2009, she took a leave of absence to
cofound, launch, and serve as chief
executive officer of a solar electronics start-up company. Her scholarly
interests focus on analog and mixedsignal ICs for mobile communications and innovative approaches to
education. She has been recognized
with the National Science Foundation's Young Investigator award, the
2006 IEEE Educational Activities
Board's Innovative Education award,
the 2016 IEEE Undergraduate Teaching award, and the 2017 HewlettPackard Harriett B. Rigas Award. She
is an IEEE Fellow.
Mar Hershenson is a cofounder
and managing partner at Pejman Mar
Ventures, a seed-stage investment
firm in Palo Alto, California. She
received her Ph.D. degree in electrical
engineering from Stanford University, California, and made her mark
IEEE SOLID-STATE CIRCUITS MAGAZINE
as an entrepreneur by cofounding
three companies: Barcelona Design,
Sabio Labs, and Revel Touch. After
the acquisition of Sabio Labs, she
served as vice-president of product
development for Magma Design Automation's Mixed Signal Division. She
has been honored by, among others,
the renowned T35 Young Innovator
Award by the Massachusetts Institute
of Technology, the prestigious Marie
R. Pistilli Women in EDA Achievement
Award in 2010, and the Midas Brink
List of Top Tech Investors in 2015.
Lucy Sanders is the chief executive officer and cofounder of the
National Center for Women and Information Technology, housed in the
ATLAS Institute at the University of
Colorado, Boulder. She has an extensive industry background, having
worked in research and development
and executive (vice-president) positions at AT&T/Lucent Bell Labs. In
1996, She w a s aw a r ded t he B ell
Labs Fellow award, the highest technical accomplishment bestowed
at the company. She serves as a
trustee for the Center for American
Entrepreneurship in Washington,
D.C., and the International Computer
Science Institute at the University
of California, Berkeley. She also has
six patents.
Catherine Ashcraft is a senior
research scientist with the National
Center for Women and Information
Technolog y at the University of
Colorado, Boulder. For the past
15 years, she has conducted research
and presented papers nationally and
internationally on issues related to
gender, diversity, information technology, and education. Her research
has been published by a number
of education and interdisciplinary
journals such as the American Educational Research Journal, Teachers
College Record, Anthropology & Education, and Youth & Society. Her most
current work includes the recently
released reports Women in Tech: The
Facts and Male Advocates and Allies:
Promoting Gender Diversity in Technology Workplaces.
