THE PEDERSON AWARD WINNER
The IEEE Donald O. Pederson Award in SolidState Circuits is sponsored by the IEEE Solid-State
Circuits Society and recognizes outstanding contributions to solid-state circuits.
The Pederson Award for 2015 is awarded to
IEEE Fellow Robert W. Adams, currently a fellow
with Analog Devices, Inc., of Wilmington, Massachusetts, "for contributions to noise-shaping
data converter circuits, digital signal processing,
and log-domain analog filters."
Adams' long history of endeavor and accomplishment spans decades. One of his earliest accomplishments was his discovery of the log-domain analog filter principle in 1978. Today, you
will find this technique in widespread use in ultra-low-power medical
integrated circuits requiring highly programmable filters.
In the late 1980s, after working in high-resolution noise-shaping converters for a number of
years, he introduced the first analog-to-digital
converter for audio with 18-bit resolution. His
design was the first to use a continuous-time
loop filter with multibit quantization. At the time,
this technique was revolutionary-today, it is the
standard for the industry.
Adams also gave us two innovative circuit techniques, a mismatch-shaping technique based on
a data-directed Butterfly switching network, and
a "dual return-to-zero" technique to overcome
inter-symbol interference. The paper containing
these two techniques won a best paper award,
and the techniques earned patents for Adams.
These are the hallmarks of the career of Robert W. Adams.
