KC: Don't burden the student
with things that are incidental to the
basic understanding.
Adel: Label them as advanced
material.
SSC: Can you give us an example
or two of what you describe as the
book's "calculated lag between basics
and the leading edge of emerging
technology"?
Adel: In our fourth edition, we
introduced gallium arsenide.
KC: Which seemed like it would
succeed.
Adel: Become mainstream. But
we took it out two editions later
because it didn't.
SSC: How else do you handle
technologies that have fizzled?
KC: We talk about them in our
preface and make them available on
the book's Web site, which reflects
all the history.
Adel: In the seventh edition,
there is a list of older or secondary

technologies that are available on
the Web site including data sheets
for hundreds of useful devices.
KC: Commercial data sheets are
always changing. Two to three years
later, the vendor has changed, added, done something funny. Thus, the

book's Web site provides consistent
original data sheets.
Adel: As well, the Web site includes
a lot on computer-aided design, SPICE,
modeling, multisim-specialized topics either not covered or covered only
briefly in the seventh edition; it also
includes all kinds of resource materials for instructors.

SSC: At the end of our magazine
piece about your sixth edition, we
quote from Oxford University Press
Vice President John Challice's statement at your party at ISSCC 2010:
"When you have a popular book
like this, the main thing, when you
revise it, is to make sure not to mess
it up." Would you say this sentiment
pertained to the development of
your seventh edition, too?
Adel: John was worried about MOS
bipolar and our new Chapter 7. So he
had Nancy send the book around
for more reviews about Chapters 5
and 6 and 7.
Adel: A year from now, we will
send [the seventh edition] to a whole
bunch of people-three dozen, or
so-for comments on specific sections of the book. We always get back
an enormous amount of material, and
more comments in e-mails. All that
goes into deciding the next edition.
KC: And attending lots of conferences and worrying about how the
world is changing.
