Correction to "Top-Cited IEEE Journal of Solid-State Circuits Papers"

The Fall 2016 issue [1] of this magazine included a list of top-cited IEEE
Journal of Solid-State Circuits (JSSC)
papers, decade by decade, for the
first 50 years of publication. The aim
of this exercise was to show today's
readers how the significant topics in
JSSC evolved over these five decades.
The method used in compiling this
list resulted in the omission of nine
papers. A corrected complete list of the
50 most-cited JSSC papers is found in
"Top-Cited IEEE Journal of Solid-State
Circuits Papers."
Google Scholar was used in November 2016 to compile the lists. Compared
to IEEE Xplore, Google Scholar typically

shows two to three times more citations. It appears that IEEE Xplore counts
only citations that point directly to
the version of record, as provided by
Xplore. Google Scholar counts citations
that point to any access site.
Until about 2011, the IEEE allowed
authors to post PDFs of their final
published IEEE papers on personal
or institutional web sites. However,
many actors other than authors
improperly posted copyrighted PDFs
of IEEE papers on other sites. When
the largest number of citations to
a paper pointed to a non-IEEE site, Google
Scholar listed that site first for access
to the paper. The fact that the version
of record is held on IEEE Xplore sometimes is obscured. Thus, a Google
Scholar search for the most highly

cited JSSC papers might not find a
paper that was most frequently cited
on a non-IEEE server.
The omitted papers were found by
searching Xplore year by year to identify the most cited papers as tabulated
by Xplore. Any papers in that list having more than ~200 citations but that
were not included in the published list
then were searched on Google Scholar.
Nine papers were found that earned
inclusion in the top 50. Our apologies
to the authors and our readers for the
omissions in the original list.
