rof. Mark Horowitz's work in solidstate circuits and very-large-scale integration is well known to most in the
industry. However, many readers may
be unaware of his fundamental contributions to the field of computational photography. He has
repeatedly found opportunities to advance the state of
the art by turning theoretical ideas into working hardware
systems. Along the way, he mentored and guided several

students toward successful research careers. In this article, written through a series of conversations with his students, two closely related projects in the computational
imaging of light fields are reviewed.

The Stanford Multiple Camera Array
In 1996, Prof. Marc Levoy and Prof. Pat Hanrahan presented
their seminal "light field rendering" paper at SIGGRAPH.
Their work described an alternative to the conventional
rendering pipeline that modeled scenes with geometric
shapes, colors, and textures and then simulated a camera
taking a picture of that scene. They leveraged light fields
