Texas Instrument and Sanbridges) tend
to implement the SDR facility with low
power consumption, low cost, and
a reprogrammable feature. The demand for the high data rates of nextgeneration wireless communication
standards can hardly be satisfied by
DSP-based solutions due to their inad-

equate performance. FPGA solutions
(for example, by Xilinx and Altera),
on the other hand, provide a flexible,
highly integrated, and low-cost feature. In FPGAs, the dynamic hardware
reconfiguration feature enables the
generation of multiple standards at
different times by allowing the algorithm at hand to be translated to ap-

propriate architecture in a very easy
manner. Along with this, low power
consumption, high data rate support
(required for 3G and 4G standards) and
reduced cost per carrier metric feature
make the FPGA an ideal platform on
which one can develop an SDR system.

by SSCS-Singapore

The IEEE Solid-State Circuits Society
(SSCS) Singapore Chapter organized
the Distinguished Lecture "Spread
Spectrum Clock Generator: Analysis and Design Perspective," by Prof.
Chulwoo Kim, Korea University. The
lecture was held on 19 February 2016
at Nanyang Technological University.
Approximately 30 students, researchers, and engineers from academia and
industry attended the event.
During the lecture, Prof. Kim presented electromagnetic interference
(EMI) as one of the most critical issues
as the degree of signal integrity (SI) becomes complex. Various EMI reduction
techniques were introduced. Spreadspectrum clock generation (SSCG) is
a popular, simple, and cost-effective
method for alleviating EMI. Prof. Kim
introduced various state-of-the-art
SSCG techniques, such as frequency
modulation and low-cost SSCG design
techniques. The effect of phase-locked
loop (PLL) bandwidth and resolution
bandwidth on solid-state circuits was
also discussed. Finally, the future trend
of solid-state circuits was discussed.
Overall, the lecture was very interactive
and well received by the attendees.
