of frequency mixing to enable laborious hand calculations of all the
mixer noise components, and subsequent optimization. Thankfully
EDA solutions for mixer NF analysis
emerged in this time frame.
Professor Niknejad's companion
article deals with the history of onchip inductors in detail so I will only
mention that a working model in
these days had a Meyer student visit
Philips- I would set them up with
Cadence design software and get
their design "stepped-in" to a product
wafer and later our technician would
quickly package the part for the student. The first monolithic inductor
from Nhat Nguyen was designed this
way on a 2 um Philips bipolar process
[6] and led to material commercial
applications at essentially all companies designing RFICs. This University/Industry model proved effective
for many grad students and for the
company due to early access.

It is well known that Bob is one of
the true experts in oscillator design.
His research in this area showed the
distortion benefits of common-cathode varactor diode arrangements
[2] which became widely adopted in
VCO design. He has designed crystal and voltage controlled oscillators of all types, and LC VCOs built
with integrated inductors were demonstrated early [9]. While at Maxim
Integrated, in the design of the
MAX2174, Bob used a translinear
pre-distorter in the tuning input of
a VCO to realize a linear modulation
1.2 GHz VCO for FSK applications
using FM. Later work involved ultralow power oscillators. Bob became
the person to go to for oscillator
design challenges at Maxim.
As cellphone use exploded the
need for very tiny power detectors exploded also. The challenge
appealed to Bob and an elegant
design was tucked into a 2x2 mm,

IEEE SOLID-STATE CIRCUITS MAGAZINE

2x2 bump chip scale package as
the MAX2205-2208. Versions served
GSM/Edge, TDMA, and CDMA
markets. Chips that are mounted
"upside down" inherently lend new
challenges to solve as the time honored skill of micro-probing is no
longer possible. Maxim sold these
products in very high volumes
as the "World's Smallest RF Power
Detectors". A follow-on power detector with automatic gain control
extended the capability to WCDMA
and CDMA2000 and employed a
completely new architecture [15:
U.S. Patent 7,994,840].
Bob is always open to a new challenges and when asked if he could
come up with something new for
antenna amplification in the AM and
FM bands, he came up with a new
architecture that eliminated expensive, external PIN diodes and high
voltage supplies and sells as the
MAX2180. Over the years at Maxim
