"When I was six my family moved from a farming
community in Minnesota to West Africa, and ever
since then I've been thinking about why agriculture
returns such vastly different rewards around the
world," says Fuglie, an economist and branch chief for
Resources, Environmental, and Science Policy at the
U.S. Department of Agriculture's Economic Research
Service, in Washington, D.C. His focus is on how
investments in science affect agricultural productivity
[see "Why the Pessimists Are Wrong," p. 26].

examines a company that plans to change the way
people look at augmented-reality displays [p. 22].
Harris is a contributing editor for IEEE Spectrum,
and in March his article about the fallibility of heart
defibrillators ["A Shocking Truth," March 2012]
earned the Grand Neal award from the Association
of Business Information & Media Companies.
"I think it reflects a growing interest in the debate
around innovation and regulation," he says.

A contributor to the Spectrum blog Energywise,
Levitan sniffed out the chance to report "I Spy Thy
Rye" [p. 46] while at the American Geophysical
Union meeting in December 2012. From among the
more esoteric subjects at that conference, Levitan
found the few presentations that connected directly
with the theme of this issue. "If satellite resolution
has gotten so good that some can almost count the
leaves on trees, we should be using them to improve
food security," says Levitan.

Keim, a freelance journalist, writes about various
topics in biology, anthropology, policy, history, ethics,
medicine, nature, technology, and sustainability. He
considers some curious connections between the
last two of these areas in the "Half Baked" items
sprinkled throughout this issue's special report on
food. Keim, who splits his time between Bangor,
Maine, and Brooklyn, N.Y., is currently working on a
book about handwriting and cognition.

[left] is passionate about applying technology to
cooking, as he demonstrates in "Tasty Morxels"
[p. 78] and in the six-volume cookbook he
coauthored, Modernist Cuisine: The Art and Science
of Cooking. Myhrvold served as chief technology
officer of Microsoft and has been a guest judge
on "Top Chef." Holman is a senior inventor at the
Intellectual Ventures Laboratory, where he has over
30 patents pending for food-printing developments.
