Hecht got his first glimpse into the wonders of
optics when his father gave him a 1-inch refractor
telescope, which the 10-year-old used to track
stars from his backyard. Decades later, he still has
that telescope, and he's now a freelance writer
who frequently covers light in its many forms. He
began questioning the early rollout of blue-rich
LED streetlights when his town installed them
in 2014, an ordeal he describes in "The EarlyAdopter Blues" [p. 44].

Mody is a historian of science and technology at
Maastricht University, in the Netherlands. A few years
ago, he did archival research at Southern Methodist
University, looking for details on integrated-circuit
pioneer Jack Kilby's work on government committees
in his later years. He was struck by Kilby's deep
involvement with solar energy research. "It comes
through pretty clearly that this is what he'd rather be
spending his time on," Mody says. He chronicles that
phase of Kilby's life in this issue [p. 50].

To capture the LED streetlights described in
"The Early-Adopter Blues" [p. 44], photographer
O'Connor chartered a helicopter outside Boston.
He chose his route based on Google satellite
images, which revealed dense neighborhoods likely
to be well lit. Sometimes, he made the pilot take a
second pass: "The challenge with helicopters is
that you can't back up," O'Connor quips. After an
hour, he'd shot roughly 600 photos, one of which is
featured in this issue.

Naasani is chief technology officer, life sciences,
for Nanoco Technologies, in Manchester, England,
a maker of quantum dots. His first exposure to
quantum dots was when he was asked to help
figure out how to make them water soluble. He
succeeded, and quantum dots are now used widely
in biomedicine. Naasani and his colleagues are now
working on quantum dots that could be used to treat
some life-threatening conditions, as he writes about
in "Fighting Cancer With Quantum Dots" [p. 26].

Auto journalist Ulrich travels the globe to test cars,
from the Formula One racecourse at Belgium's Circuit
de Spa-Francorchamps to the raceway in Laguna
Seca, Calif. The Acura NSX [see "Supercar 2.0," p. 32]
took him to the California desert, where the hybrid
electric supercar left Ulrich feeling optimistic. "Speed
freaks have long worried that greens and government
mandates for electric propulsion would make fast
cars obsolete, illegal, or both," he says. "But electricity
may well be their savior instead."
