with alcohol prohibition have shown. Fortunately, SM is
one type of addiction where we do not need to strive for
completely eliminating its use. Throughout human history, the desire to connect and the need to gain and
show one's status have played destructive roles at time,
but they are fundamental human needs that have led to
innovation and progress. With the four-pronged
approach above we can adapt and manage time spent
on SM and avoid abuse. Moderate SM use can continue
to play a beneficial role in society.
