The advances are real. The problems seem remote.
The pursuit can be profitable, and may someday be

Advancing technology carries on Schneider and
Kay's order emerging from disorder in the service
of causing even more disorder. The " accelerating
returns [to itself] " of the vertical rising exponential
has, with ever escalating speed, twisted co-evolution
into techno-evolution/human-devolution. The prospect
of untethered ASI, maximizing its own future
freedom of action at entropic human expense, not
only far exceeding human intelligence, but actively
devolving human intelligence, elite human intelligence
downstream included, is setting we, the
human species, up for checkmate. This is not smart.
At the close of Superintelligence, Nick Bostrom
expressed his concern like this:
Before the prospect of an intelligence explosion,
we humans are like small children playing with a
bomb. Such is the mismatch between the power
of our plaything and the immaturity of our conduct.
Superintelligence is a challenge for which
we are not ready now and will not be ready for
a long time. We have little idea when the detonation
will occur, though if we hold the device to
our ear we can hear a faint ticking sound [71]. 
