SSIT's
45th Anniversary

uring 2017, the IEEE
Society on Social
Implications of Tech-
nology (SSIT), one of
the fastest growing
IEEE Societies, celebrates its 45th
Anniversary.
As a Society whose focus comple-
ments the technical activities of all
other IEEE Societies, we have active,
committed teams of volunteers
around the world contributing to
conferences, publications, stan-
dards, and the Future Directions
Initiative, as well as sustainable de-
velopment activities in Africa.
SSIT activities going forward
( including our Distinguished Lec-
t u rers Program) will now be focused
around SSIT's 5 Pillars:
■ Sustainable Development &
Humanitarian Technology
■ Ethics, Human Values and Tech-
nology
■ Technology Benefits for All
■ Future Societal Impact of Tech-
nology Advances
■ Protecting the Planet - Sustain-
able Technology
SSIT is truly demonstrating leader-
ship in supporting operationaliza-
tion of the IEEE Tagline, "Advancing
Technology for Humanity." However,
sustaining and expanding our pro-
grams requires access to more
volunteers as well as more finan-
cial  esources.

like to request your assistance in
this regard.

Call for Volunteers
If you are already an active volunteer,
I would like to thank you for your ser-
vice and commitment to making a dif-
ference in this blue and green world
where we all live.
If you are not already an active
SSIT volunteer or are looking for
new challenges, I invite you to help
SSIT continue to make a difference.
Local volunteer opportunities
include:
■ Serve in your local SSIT Chapter
committee.
■ Support local rollout of activities
related to SSIT's 5 Pillars.
■ Help establish a new SSIT Chap-
ter in your area.
■ Volunteer to host SSIT Distin-
guished Lecturers.
■ Submit articles or review sub-
missions to SSIT' s award-
winning IEEE Technology and
Society Magazine.
■ Review submissions to the
annual IEEE International Sym-
posium on Technology and
