n the film Her, the ma in cha racter
Theodore sits in a darkened room, lit
only by a computer screen in front
of him (Figure 1). A synthetic voice
helps him to set up his new "Operating System."
"Would you like your OS to have a
male or female voice?" it asks.
"Female, I guess," says Theodore.
"How would you describe your relationship with
your mother?" asks the voice.
After starting to describe his mother, the synthetic voice says "thank you" and a wheel starts to
spin on the screen with accompanying music in
anticipation. It stops, and after a pause a natural
sounding, female voice says,
"Hello, I'm here."
Theodore's face lights up in surprise, with
a smile.
"Oh... hi!" he says.
Dur ing the course of the film, Theodore
appears to fall in love with the voice, which
names itself Samantha. While this voice is not
embodied, its power to transform interaction is
