What is AI?
AI is a technology that makes machines seem smart, letting them " think "
and solve problems like people do. While we use the word " think " to describe
AI, it doesn't actually think like humans do. We often use the term to describe how AI
processes information and makes decisions. We will continue to use the word " think, "
but keep this in mind whenever you see it. Though it doesn't fully " think, " these " smart "
machines perform more reliably with multiple iterations, improving over time as they
gain experience. The machine can adapt to new information and do things by itself that a
human would normally need to do.
Machines can learn to recognize people in photos, play video games, and even assist
doctors in diagnosing diseases! They can do it really well, too! In 1997, IBM created
an AI called Deep Blue. This AI was capable of playing chess and even emerged
victorious against the world champion. From 2004 to 2011, IBM developed another AI,
named Watson, with the goal of answering Jeopardy questions and outperforming real
contestants. AI has gotten even better at doing tasks since then!
In 2024, some common AI tools available to the public include ChatGPT, Microsoft
Copilot, and Google's Gemini. You'll discover that AI finds numerous applications in our
daily lives. We were able to make basic AI systems in the past, but because computers
are getting more and more powerful while being more energy efficient and less expensive
than ever before, we are now at the point where we can make really complex AI that can
look at a lot of information and do really impressive things.
