& Generative AI
While AI can already do a lot, imagine
if it could also understand people
talking! The field of natural language
processing in AI aims to assist computers
in comprehending and utilizing human
language. Some early examples of this
include Siri and Alexa, whom you could
talk to and get a response from, though
they were more limited in what they could
do. You can now tell an AI program almost
anything and it will understand you! This
led to the creation of generative AI, a
type of AI that generates new content, such
as text, images, music, and videos, based
on text input by its user. It works by using
machine learning and deep learning to
" teach " the AI how to make the content
and natural language processing so it can
understand what people want it to do.
Now, an AI program can understand what
people want and create unique content
based on what it has learned to do!
Generative AI Mission: Making AI Smarter
TRY: Select a generative AI tool you're allowed to use, like
ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot, or any similar AI, and provide
it with prompts. Start by thinking of some interesting
questions or tasks you want the AI to help with. Here are a few
ideas to get you started:
* Ask it to tell you a story about a magical adventure.
* Request help with your homework, like solving a math problem
or explaining a science concept.
* Challenge it to come up with a fun game or activity you
can try at home.
* Ask it to write a poem or a song about your favorite animal.
Pay attention to how the AI responds to your prompts.
REFLECT: Does it give helpful answers? Is it creative?
Does it make any mistakes? Think about why the AI might
respond the way it does. What kind of information is it
using to generate its answers?
Experiment with different prompts. Try giving the AI different types
of prompts to see how it handles various tasks. For example, you
could ask it to:
* Describe a historical event.
* Create a recipe for a delicious snack.
* Explain how a piece of technology works.
* Make up a joke or a riddle.
* Create an image of a place and object and label it.
After you've tried out a few prompts, share your experience with
your classmates or family.
This activity will help you understand how generative AI works and
give you a chance to see its creativity and problem-solving abilities
in action.

AI works? What were some of the most interesting
or surprising responses you got? What do you
think are the strengths and limitations of generative
AI? How do you envision AI assisting people in
the future?
