School of Engineering, happened to be the
most prolific e-sports champions in the
United States, everything came together.
The foundation decided to research
and beta test a concept: How could they
look at e-sports through an academic
lens? They hired 14 teachers from UCI and
the Orange County Department of Education and tasked them with creating a
four-year, STEM-based curriculum on an
English language arts (ELA) platform that
conformed to California's CTE standards.
The result? A full four-year high
school curriculum with 15 CTE tracks
and a middle school curriculum. Five
months later, the Samueli Foundation
had approval from the state of California
for this new STEM-based curriculum on
an ELA platform tied to not only the Next
Generation Science Standards, the International Society for Technology in Education, CTE, and Common Core standards,
but to the Center for Academic, Social,
and Emotional Learning social and emotional learning standards as well.
This is the Samueli Foundation's philanthropy. They don't charge schools,
after-school programs, or out-of-school
programs. They provide the curriculum,
professional development, and competitions to create a holistic approach to gaming that doesn't cost a penny.

An NASEF club member talks with Miami Dade Superintendent Alberto Carvalho.
NASEF tournaments are as much about showcasing club creations such as team
blogs, logos, graphic art, and computer programs as they are about gaming.

On a typical sports team, players are
surrounded by others. There are public
relations staff, web designers, and data
analytics experts. There are journalists,
bloggers and, in e-sports, the shoutcasters who make the games so entertaining
for fans. This is the NASEF's curriculum.
It's not the gaming, but the careers and
opportunities surrounding gaming. In
this way, the NASEF allows kids to connect what they already enjoy with potential careers and with the curriculum to
move them forward.
It has been two years since the program debuted in Orange County, and
there are now NASEF teams in 1,000
schools in 49 states with more than
10,000 participants. Outside of the United States, the NASEF has Memorandums
of Understanding with the United Kingdom, Israel, Japan, Mexico, South Africa,
and France.
Laylah Bulman, senior program officer
for the Samueli Foundation, implemented
the NASEF in Florida, and this implementation is now the model for all work worldwide. Bulman knows kids. She was a teacher and administrator for 17 years and has
been an expert in education for the U.S.
