this idea. They are currently using their
own money to fund prototypes for toys
and kits that they plan to test on their
friends' kids and a children's book they
will self-publish, and have
avenues for funding in
mind when they get
to that point. A
future hope is
to collaborate
with academia
or indust r y,
allowing them
to get more
involved with
education centers
in this area.

a social-impact start-up, so
we are mission first, " says Helus. The
mission to make AI education and literacy
accessible to everyone is one
they are incredibly passionate about
because they see the application of
this understanding as twofold: not
only will people pay more attention to
the potential operational and ethical
issues the women research in
their " day jobs, " but they hope to
encourage more diverse representation
on technology development
teams by opening up the understanding-and
enjoyment-of AI
and machine learning.
" There are people
from underrepresented
groups who
need to be cognizant
of what's
at stake when
developing this
technology, so
companies are
held accountable
for what they
build, " continues
Helus. " The people
most at risk of harm can
mitigate it if we're out there
spreading this education. "
" Let's get more people, more girls,
more people of color, working on these
programs so they can bring diverse perspectives
to them, " adds Brown. " When
we were growing up, Vicky didn't have
a lot of encouragement to get into this
field and, while I had encouragement,
I didn't have a full understanding of
everything you could do with it. Showing
people that you don't have to be
the stereotypical nerdy computer scientist
to have a STEM career, or to
understand high-level STEM concepts,
is important. "
And from the youngest age, knowledge
provides power. " As someone who
grew up being told I was bad at math
and science but did it anyway, we want
kids to feel empowered to study whatever
they want to study, " says Helus. If
Helus and Brown can get young kids
excited about the emergence of new
technologies now, who knows what
companies and innovation that generation
will launch when they come of
age next?
