Da Vià with colleagues and high school students at Itemba Lab in Cape Town, South Africa, as part of a WIE event.
10-year anniversary of the Higgs boson
discovery is a great moment, but we are
moving on to see what we can contribute
to the next big discovery. Can we understand,
for example, what is dark matter
or dark energy? "
Around 1999, Da Vià began thinking
it would be good to have a more
permanent position, so she enrolled in
a postdoctoral program at Brunel University,
near London. In 2007, she was
offered a staff position at the University
of Manchester, United Kingdom,
where she is currently a professor of
physics. She is also a visiting professor
at Stony Brook University in New
York; chief editor of the journal Frontiers
in Physics, Radiation Detectors
and Imaging; cochair of the ATTRACT
Initiative's Independent Committee,
which funds detection and imaging
innovation in Europe; and a speaker,
writer, mentor, and IEEE Nuclear and
Plasma Sciences Society (NPSS) Distinguished
Lecturer.
The mentoring came about naturally,
as Da Vià noticed she was attracting
female students and colleagues. " Probably
because there are still not that
many women in the field, and in my
generation there were even less than we
see today, I almost immediately began
having female Ph.D. students, " she says.

of the technology review of the 3D sensors' performance that resulted in an
agreement to have the sensors installed in the ATLAS experiment.
women is a natural part of the work I do,
with great pleasure. "
An Active Community
A passion for empowering women is also
what encouraged Da Vià to get more
involved with WIE. She joined IEEE,
and in particular the NPSS, after a
supervisor from CERN brought her to a
conference. She was invited to be part of
a panel discussion among women, which
was her first introduction to WIE, and
then a few years later was asked to organize
a WIE panel event and become the
DECEMBER 2022
liaison for the NPSS. She is currently a
Senior Member of IEEE and has served
in various leadership positions throughout
her membership.
Over the years, Da Vià contributed to
many activities and discussions, some
of which were around ideas that have
ultimately been implemented as part of
WIE's 25th anniversary celebrations.
However, as chair of the celebration,
it fell to her, alongside an outstanding
group of volunteers and staff, to
formalize these many activations into
the year-long event.
