learn from many experts across the
semiconductor industry, " she shares.
" There is no dearth of energies and
ideas among the members, and this
keeps us all motivated to continue to
foster innovation and make forward
progress to support emerging technological
initiatives. "
Athavale's work in standards and
emerging technology in functional
safety is directly tied to her " day job "
at NVIDIA, where she works on driving
new tools, methods, and pathfinding
for automotive functional safety
architectures as well as standardization
activities in the area of dependability.
She also drives capabilities for
new and emerging safety-critical markets
such as avionics and transportation.
" At NVIDIA, we believe the future
of transportation is autonomous, and
safety is our number-one priority, " she
explains. " My goal is to continue to
drive innovations in the field of functional
safety and reliability to ensure
these next-generation, highly automated
and autonomous vehicles/machines
are safe and robust. "
She joined NVIDIA in early 2021
after more than 20 years at Intel. First,
Athavale, who grew up in Bombay,
India, received a bachelor's degree in
electrical engineering from the University
of Mumbai and a master's degree
in the same field from Iowa State University,
joined Analogy Inc. as a software
engineer working on electronic
design automation tools development.
From there, she went to Intel where,
she recalls, " I was exposed to hardware
aspects of system-on-chip development,
including process technology,
reliability modeling and architectures,
along with functional safety architecture
for automotive and avionics safetycritical
applications. "
" One of my key technical focus areas
throughout my time at Intel was radiation
effects modeling and mitigation
strategies, " continues Athavale. " However,
in both the individual contributor
and people management roles at Intel, I
learned a lot about product development
as a whole, qualification and certification
challenges, customer requirements
as well as pathfinding and research for
emerging dependable technologies. This
led me to engage and drive work in the
area of standardization of new technology
challenges related to functional safety.
I am continuing these architecture
and pathfinding activities in my current
role at NVIDIA. "
Future Opportunities
Looking to the future, Athavale and her
colleagues at NVIDIA believe " safe AI
(artificial intelligence) and dependable
computing " will be essential to the safe
development of autonomous vehicles.
" This is a critical area of growth, with
many challenges and opportunities,
