state of Maine to teach science after seeing vast gaps in accessibility
and quality in science curriculums. Teller overhauled
curriculums and built a cohort of support for teachers to
learn to teach science. Her methodologies are now the blueprint
for other communities to follow, and her teacher mentees
are now leading the United States in the best teaching
practices for science.
We are making significant strides attracting more youth

and young women into science and engineering, but at the
higher echelons of education, we still see very few women
participating. Recruiting women for doctoral programs continues
to stagnate. Institutions struggle to keep the few
women they enroll and retain the few female faculty they
hire. The Thriving Stars program is taking this challenge
head on with innovative supportive programs for female
Ph.D. students. We hope its program can help improve your
own institutions' programs or help other women in doctoral
programs find support.
Our engineers and volunteers continue to astound the
public with our vast skills and capacity to solve societal challenges.
They are even more surprised that we approach these
challenges with compassion and respect for the individuals
and communities we serve, even if we don't share the same
background or cultural experiences. Furthermore, we do it as
volunteers and expect nothing in return. I often hear that the
benefits we receive in return for our efforts is priceless. For
me, I have met aspirational people around the globe, learned
new technology and cultural traditions from experts, and
watched countless numbers of children flourish because of
our interactions and support.
Although the world may seem unkinder and more divided,
find comfort in knowing that in WIE, no one stands alone.
We will continue to be the champions of change putting into
action the qualities of kindness, respect, and our engineering
savvy. This will undoubtedly be the winning recipe for all of
humanity to overcome any challenge.
