Turning the Tide
m
My journey of discovery and innovation
in the fields of artificial intelligence (AI)
and computer vision (CV) began with a
background rooted in electronics and
robotics. Several years of experience in
industry and academia have provided
many insights into the enormous potential
and exciting possibilities this field
holds. I got my Ph.D. degree focusing on
AI and CV, where I dive into groundbreaking
projects that showcase the transformative
power of these technologies.
AI is a captivating realm, where
innovative technologies are reshaping
industries and pushing the boundaries
of human potential. Although the possibilities
in this field are endless, it is critical
to address the underrepresentation
of women. Despite significant progress,
there are still gender disparities in the

number of women pursuing careers in
AI. In this article, I aim to highlight the
great potential of women with advanced
degrees, such as a Ph.D. or masters, to
develop and lead in this field, fostering a
more diverse and inclusive future.
The field of AI has
made tremendous pro -
gress in recent years,
but it's no secret that
women are still un -
derrepresented in it.
However, this gender
difference does not
indicate a lack of talent
or ability, it reflects
the systemic barriers,
unconscious biases,
and limited access to
resources and opportunities
that have
historically hindered
women's advancement
in science, technology, engineering,
and mathematics fields.
However, the tide is turning. Women
are breaking down barriers and making
significant strides in AI and CV. Their
contributions are reshaping the technology
landscape, paving the way for
a more inclusive and equitable future.
Women like Fei-Fei Li, codirector
of the Stanford Institute for HumanCentered
AI, have played critical roles
in advancing AI and promoting ethics
and inclusivity in the field. Joy Buolamwini,
founder of the Algorithmic Justice
League, has been a leading advocate for
tackling bias and ensuring fairness in
AI algorithms.
Their groundbreaking work serves
as inspiration for aspiring women in
the field, showcasing what's possible
and sparking a drive for change. In
addition, I have made a career switch to
focus on AI with a background in electronics
and robotics, demonstrating my
determination to explore new horizons
and contribute to the advancement of
this technology.
By sharing my personal journey and
achievements in this article, I try to
showcase the possibilities that arise from
AI in medical images.
