look for very familiar indicators, but we
know that not everyone comes from
the same path. We want to look at all
kinds of backgrounds, which we very
much feel is part of the excellence of
the program. "
With the growth of 22% in female
applicants after just that first year, the
team was thrilled. " That first year was a
lot of work, and it was a lot of work without
knowing what the outcome would
be, " reflects Ozdaglar. " While we are
nowhere close to done, after that it got
easier because we knew what worked. "
" With each successive cohort, the
representation of women is increased
and the 'needle is moving,' " says
Kolodziejski. " Personally I am optimistic,
but I realize the challenge is significant,
the effort must be sustained, and
more individuals are needed to support
Thriving Stars' vision and goal of gender
parity. "
Expanding Globally
Year three is about that expansion, with
Thriving Stars programming extending
to focus on the ongoing career network,
" which will support creation of
new opportunities for our Ph.D. women
graduates, allowing them to contribute
important technological advances

The team will also look to partner with
other schools around the globe, offering
access to their online programming that
can help motivate or give confidence to
aspiring Ph.D. students, and enlarging
the network for all.
Although 40% female participation
in the Ph.D. program is the ultimate
goal, success for Thriving Stars is not
just about the numbers. " I will feel very
happy if we look at our program and we
see students thriving with all kinds of
support mechanisms, " shares Ozdaglar.
" One thing I would like to achieve is to
be able to have for everyone a group of
people that they can rely on, not just
for career opportunities but for various
reasons, which I feel is so important to
be successful. "
Again, the team appears to be
headed in the right direction on this
front, with students reporting feelings
of support from both the faculty and
