plan to leave engineering because the work
culture was better in other places. Caring
for children is another common reason
why women in academia resign from work.

our survey feel that salaries are better
in other disciplines for women
compared to women. Promotions and
tenures are also quite uncommon
among women in engineering. When
asked about remedial actions to retain
women, the highest vote went to regular
monitoring of meetings and making
sure that the conversations don't
become hostile. Almost 70% of participants
felt that their workload was
high and another 25% preferred a more
flexible teaching schedule to maintain a
work-life balance.

Academic Workload
In response to our survey, we looked deeper
into the workload balance of female
academics in engineering. To determine
the teaching load, we considered the total
number of students taught across multiple
subjects in an academic year. To measure
the research impact, we considered the
number of Scopus citations at the end
of the year. We considered three female
academics, denoted by red circles, and six
male academics, indicated by blue circles.
Research projects are often led by my male
academics, and consequently, they have
lower teaching loads. The figure shows
that as the number of citations increases,
the teaching load for men first increases
and then rapidly declines. However, for
women, we see an increase in the teaching
load with research impact. This might
suggest that women in engineering have a
higher total workload compared to men.
In conclusion, we feel that nurturing
interests is a lifelong process. Confidence
must be cultivated in the early
years. A university education must prepare
them with workplace issues such
as time management and communication
skills. University management
must monitor meetings and teaching
load regularly in this discipline to ensure
the mitigation of unfair activities.
