Suryanarayana focuses on sustainability

When Lalitha Suryanarayana says, " The
only way to know about the future is
to create it, " she means it. And with a
career spanning impressive, influential
roles in R&D, product development, and
corporate strategy, she is doing it.
An electrical engineer with a master's
degree from NYU Polytechnic
Institute and a Master of Business
Administration (MBA) degree from the
University of Texas at Austin, Suryanarayana
is currently the vice president of
strategy, mergers, and acquisitions at
Infineon Technologies of Americas in
California. In this role, she works with
Infineon's many teams to drive strategic
initiatives tied to technology, products,
innovation and customer experience, all
while abiding by the company's mission
to make lives easier, safer, and greener.
" This is a wide playing field for someone
like me, " she says. " We have a leading
position in several areas, including
power, security, and automotive that, for
me, means more complex technology,
more products to play with, and more
interesting problems to solve every day. "
Making an Impact
A problem solver by nature, Suryanarayana
has always had a desire to make
a real impact, both on people and the
world around us. " An aspect of that is

improving lives through technology,
so I started in R&D
straight out of school, "
she explains. Her first
job was at Nynex Science
and Technology (which
became Verizon Communications)
as a member of
the technical staff, working
on commercial telecommunications
(telecom) services.
However, she began to get a feel for the
business side of telecom when she led
the design and development of CallAbility
Feature Access, a call forwarding
capability that the team turned from a
service idea into a product offering.
Suryanarayana next joined SBC Communications
(now AT&T), working across
both phone and Internet projects at first.
" Mobile phones were all the rage for phone
calls, but using them for data and content
like we do now was a big deal then, "
she recalls. She began working alongside
industry peers on technology standards
relating to device-independent
application architectures, the
premise behind the concept
that you can access content
from any device. " This was
a real cause for disruption
as smartphones evolved, and
