being distributed to over 52 countries through IEEE WIE outreach events. When IEEE WIE put out the call to our members
to help with this initiative, the overwhelming response became a
testament that the "WIE" community is truly the most thriving
professional organization in the world for promoting the advancement and retention of women in engineering, science, mathematics, and technology. The posters are still available as a great
IEEE WIE outreach tool for our readers to share with their local
schools, universities, and workplaces.
On behalf of IEEE WIE Chair Prof. Ramalatha Marimuthu
and the entire IEEE WIE community, we thank the IEEE Life
Members Committee and the IEEE Foundation for recognizing
the promise of the "I Change the World. I am an Engineer." initiative. The IEEE Life Members Fund of the IEEE Foundation made
it possible for WIE to create the IEEE WIE posters, video, and Web
resources in 2012. The WIE resources developed will:
◗ demonstrate to students from all backgrounds that
engineering is an exciting career path
◗ promote diversity within the engineeing profession
◗ document activities conducted by WIE Affinity Groups
globally that are benefitting humanity
◗ increase public awareness about the importance of
engineering in everyday life.
The purpose of these projects is to communicate the essence of
how IEEE WIE fosters the exchange of scientific and technological
knowledge to develop innovations for the good of our global society.
How many times has someone asked you, "What is the difference between a computer scientist and a computer engineer or
electrical engineer?" Well, in 2012, you can look forward to our
IEEE WIE e-Resource, a guide containing descriptions and profiles
of careers in the IEEE fields of interest. IEEE WIE would like to
acknowledge and thank Marsh U.S. Consumer for making this
project possible. Marsh U.S. Consumer will be recognized for supporting a project that will inspire and empower young students to
become engineers, while documenting the achievements of women
at IEEE as role models in the profession and raising the awareness
of the importance of engineering and how it benefits humanity.
IEEE WIE is a community of both men and women promoting
the advancement and inclusion of women and girls in engineering
and science. To some individuals, this mission may seem daunting and could be mistakenly viewed as "us" against the world.
Rather, we, as the IEEE WIE community, view it as "us" changing
the world for the betterment of everyone. We understand that to
accomplish this, everyone is needed, including the world's most
underutilized natural resource, women. I guarantee that you will
find that in the process of effecting change in the world around
you, you also change yourself for the better.
Thank you to all our IEEE WIE role models. IEEE Women in
Engineering Magazine is proud to celebrate you!
