with certain personalities allows you
to successfully intuit how to effectively communicate with them so you are
able to get what you need. The key is to
try-while in the room-to get as much
information as you can by taking a position or communicating in a way they
can relate to or identify with so it brings
those people closer to you and opens
them up."
If the two managers have very divergent expectations, though, you still have
your work cut out for you. The optimal situation, Lindner says, is to speak
individually with them, understand their
expectations, and try to find a middle
ground. "As a master communicator and someone who is really talented
in bringing people together, optimally, you can satisfy both. The problem
often comes when your two managers
have such divergent expectations that
you're going to satisfy one but not
the other."

Lindner has seen this happen before
and acknowledges that this can be a difficult situation. "I have a client that is
working for two masters and, in essence,
one wants a show that is warm and conversational, the other wants one that
is hard news and totally scripted-it is
impossible to satisfy both masters, and
in fact my client is having a really hard
time doing so. If she can't find a middle
ground, it may well be that she just has
to do the best job she can to find the
best strategic solution and let the chips
fall where they may."
The scenarios that play out in work
spaces all over are not really that different. Much of success in any field can be
attributed not just to intellectual intelligence but to emotional intelligence and
the ability to handle yourself effectively
in a variety of different situations.
Lindner explains that it all boils down
to one main tenet: "No matter what you
do, you always want to know what you

want to secure with any conversation,
any interaction, and any life choice that
you make-before you enter into it, or
make it, respectively. Additionally, there
may be data that you learn while you
have that interaction that may change
that choice. What you don't want at
'crunch time' is to be dismantled by an
emotion such as hurt, resentment, hopelessness, or anger. You don't want your
emotional buttons to be pushed so that
you make a destructive life choice and opt
for a quick, emotion-assuaging fix that
makes you feel better for the moment.
When we do this, our decision or life
choice is more often than not inconsistent with what we really want for the long
term, which is to sustain our career success, to maintain a positive relationship
and to keep our image and standing in
the workplace strong."

"Certainly, there are innate challenges for women working in the still
largely male-dominated computing
industry, and both overt and covert
discrimination exist," Chang says. "At
the same time, structuring both academic curricula and industry projects
to embrace building complete solutions
that meet real needs can make software development more fulfilling
for women and for men. It might even
result in better designed and more
usable products for us all."
In developing countries, there is an
opportunity to start fresh and build new
technology and engineering professions
from the start with more equal representation-avoiding the trap of the selfreinforcing male bias. "We've already
