The start of any new term heralds reflections on past achievements interwoven
with hopes for the future. In 2012, IEEE
Women in Engineering (WIE) established
a strong Facebook presence, created an
inspiring video, launched eye-catching
posters, published an inspiring eBook,
supported several conference partnerships, added 41 new affinity groups (to
bring the worldwide total to 414), and
reached over 14,700 total members.
These accomplishments were made possible by an engaged, vibrant community of
volunteers led by Chair Ramalatha Marimuthu. I am grateful for their legacy and
thank them for their volunteer service.
For 2013, I hope to focus on four
main objectives: 1) communication with
our more than 14,700 members through
our award-winning, professional IEEE
Women in Engineering Magazine and
social media campaigns (e.g., Facebook);
2) engagement with industry to provide
enhanced member benefits with conferences to celebrate and highlight WIE
(e.g., WIE special events at existing IEEE
conferences); 3) outreach through our
more than 400 affinity groups to encourage young girls to pursue engineering
and to engage current IEEE members by
providing learning opportunities, networking, and support; and 4) fundraising
vibrant, engaged, thoughtful, impressive, active group of volunteers in fulfilling the WIE mission to inspire, engage,
encourage, and empower IEEE women
worldwide.
By way of introduction, let me share
with you a set of corollaries that I created
once upon a time to meet a Toastmasters' speech objective. In the 1680s Newton developed three laws of motion that
define how the world works on a macroscopic (large, universal) scale. Around
2005, I defined three corollaries (definito endow the Frances Hugle Scholarship
