Al Ain, but she didn't start volunteering
for the IEEE until several years later, in
2003, while living and working in Dubai.
The IEEE UAE Section chair and Section secretary wanted her help to establish
an IEEE Women in Engineering (WIE)
affinity group. They needed help getting
signatures for a petition and wanted her to
call the existing female and WIE members
in the UAE.
She received a list of WIE members and
read about WIE affinity groups. She went
through the list of members and called
(and sometimes traveled) to contact them
to obtain their signature on the petition.
Sometimes there were wrong numbers,
and it wasn't clearly identified whether the
person on the list was male or female. In
the UAE, some names are used by both
men and women. One time she called and
asked for an engineer by name, assuming it
was the man who answered, but it was his
wife. Althani had to contact each name in
person to determine the gender.

Althani was the first female to ever become Section chair for the IEEE UAE Section in 2012.
