modeling problems, and she thought about becoming an architectural engineer.
She enrolled at UAE University in the faculty of engineering.
Her professor of mathematics, Dr. Mustafa Amer, advised her to
join electrical engineering instead of architectural, saying that
she would be able to master her mathematics modeling talent
in electrical engineering. She selected one optional architecture
course and one electrical course to compare and make up her
mind. Althani found that she was more interested in electrical
engineering than architectural engineering.
Personal and Professional Success
After graduating from UAE University and receiving her B.S.
degree in electrical engineering, Althani worked at the university
as PC lab supervisor. Part of her job was to teach some soft skills
to her colleagues and university staff. She thought about going
back to study further, but she decided that she needed to work in
industry to apply her knowledge and gain industrial experience.
She applied and joined Dubai Aluminium Company, DUBAL,
and worked with the technical support team and the Projects
Department, where she trained for a year with the maintenance
team and then went on to manage and lead engineering projects in the smeltering area. She also worked at the Dubai Cable
Company Ltd (DUCAB), managing engineers and projects and
setting up a new manufacturing facility. She became a Qualified
Engineer and eventually went back to school to get an executive
master's degree in business administration from Zayed University, also in the UAE. Since then she's worked in executive positions at several companies such as Schneider Electric and Dubai
International Financial Center and served as a professional on
many local and international boards such as Emirates Science
Club, Entrepreneurs Forum (Dubai), and International Mensa,
in addition to the IEEE. Althani is currently running the department responsible for corporate partner relationship management as a senior manager at the Department at Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA), the main supply for electricity
and water to Dubai residents.
Althani recalls that there were many key life experiences, both
personal and professional, that helped her successfully run her
IEEE Section during her time as chair. She credits her background
in quality as a quality and safety audit volunteer in DUBAL as
well as her experience serving on several other boards, such as
the Dubai Quality Group, Dubai Entrepreneurs, and Mensa. Her
professional experiences of working with a team setting up Hawkamah (the Institute of Corporate Governance) and as a project
manager helped her in setting up programs for the IEEE. Finally,
she says her education, family, and upbringing were important,
specifically the way she was taught to be responsible and sincere
about the environment, society, and the people around her.
To future engineers in Arab countries and elsewhere
around the world, Althani advises, "Be positive. Trust yourself, and act positively."
