research outcomes within multimedia
data processing at an IEEE conference.
In 2008, Hashimoto became a member
of WIE and, in 2011, she became the
coordinator of Region 10 (Asia-Pacific
region) WIE. "I was really honored to
take the lead of WIE activities in R10
for the last four years," she says. "R10 is
the most emerging team in IEEE WIE.
As coordinator, I organized various
events, such as conferences, congresses,
and sessions, as well as provided funds
to support local WIE activities, published high-quality articles in R10
newsletters, and worked to award and
highlight excellent affinity groups and
distinguished volunteers."
She will take these experiences, as
well as those from her time as chair of
the IEEE Japan Council WIE affinity
group, into her new role as committee
chair. Hashimoto says what she's most
looking forward to is meeting with
members around the world and working together to further WIE's mission
of inspiration and enablement. "This
year, we will organize the IEEE WIE
Leadership Conference and International Leadership Summits (regional
WIE ILC), form an interactive communication platform globally, and
continue to publish IEEE Women in
Engineering Magazine and newsletters.
Through these member engagements,
I would like WIE to be more powerful,"
says Hashimoto.
Her intentions center on those same
pillars of networking and mentorship
that led Hashimoto to first become
involved with WIE. With the 2015 Leadership Conference, she hopes to organize virtual tracks for those who cannot
join in person and provide travel grants
for those who need assistance attending. Launching international leadership summits are part of an effort to
expand global networking opportunities through the support of events that
are topically focused on issues important to individual regions while inviting
global attendees to serve as role models and further what she calls "mutual
understanding."
Networking opportunities will also
expand through the addition of new

honors. WIE already provides awards,
scholarships, and grants to professional
and Student Branch WIE affinity groups
and to particular members; however,
Hashimoto shares that there are also
considerations to create new awards for
inspiring students/members and industry partners.
News about these recognitions, the
conferences and exchange programs,
or the WIE events that the committee recognizes occurs almost every day
somewhere around the globe, which
is why Hashimoto plans to develop a
more interact ive communic at ion
platform. "Through the platform, we
would like to provide a function to
share/know event information easily,"
she describes. "If you are interested in
an event held in a different country,
you would be able to get information
or reports. There would be the necessary logistical information as well
as communication details about Facebook Web chats, IEEE Women in Engineering Magazine, and newsletters."
Perhaps most innovative would be the
addition of a communication space on
the platform where, says Hashimoto,
"WIE members can find friends/mentors and form communities flexibly."
These areas are important to Hashimoto because, she explains, "we sometimes face difficult situations for developing our career, but through WIE
activities, we can feel that we are not
alone. It is a prime benefit of WIE."
By leading the charge through 2015,
Hashimoto hopes to continue building on an organization that already has
such grand strength, so that it is available for future generations of aspiring
female engineers.
"IEEE WIE is one of the best global
teams of women in engineering in the
world," she says. "Engineering is one
of the ideal professions for women,
because engineering skill surely helps
your career development. With a network like WIE, there are additional
opportunities to develop leadership
skills [that are] useful in various stages
of life. Please take the opportunities and
move forward!"

Driving Engagement
in STEM
Ammentorp inspires all-girls
engineering club

t

The members of the all-female engineering club at Granby High School in Norfolk, Virginia, presented the outcome of
the Marine Advanced Technology International Competition, in which they demonstrated their remote control water vehicle,
to IEEE members in November 2014.
While the girls placed 27th in the Ranger
class, the rankings are secondary to the
team having made it to the Michiganbased event in the first place.
The club is a complement to an all-girls'
engineering cla ss
for freshmen, which
started two years ago
in a joint effort kicked
off by IEEE volunteer
Jennifer Ammentorp,
Granby High school Jennifer Ammentorp
teacher Sabrina Gunton,
and Deborah Marshall, Granby's Technology and Science Department chair.
The initiative began when former university schoolmates Gunton and Ammentorp
were discussing their concerns about the
high school's female students, many of
whom were smart but not reaching their
potential in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) fields due to
social pressures. "Girls frequently requested to be moved if they found they were the
only girl in a class," says Ammentorp.
Given the enthusiasm and excitement Ammentorp showed about her
engineering role at the shipyard, the
women thought she could help by speaking about her experiences and describing the opportunities that exist for engineers in the local Virginia area.
Involved in outreach to high schools
while getting her engineering degree years
earlier, Ammentorp knew this lack of engagement was not a new problem. Nor was
it solely a female one, as even as her own
