professional careers, as an undergraduate and Graduate Student Member at Duke University, an assistant professor at
Princeton University, during her 23-year research career at
AT&T Laboratories, and now as an electrical engineering professor at Purdue University. Her current interests include video
processing, video quality, and video analytics.
Reibman has volunteered for the IEEE in multiple areas,
starting as a reviewer and then associate editor of a journal in
her area of signal processing. She organized local conferences,
served as a member of several technical committees of the
IEEE Signal Processing Society (SPS) in the 1990s, and was a
technical cochair for the prestigious IEEE International Conference on Image Processing in 2002. She also wrote nominations for others who became Fellows. She served on the SPS's
Fellow Evaluating Committee first and then as a member of
the IEEE Fellow Committee before being asked to be the chair
of the Fellow Committee.
The Benefits of Becoming a Fellow
IEEE Fellow awards have been around for more than 50 years,
honoring the best and brightest Members who have made
extraordinary contributions to their IEEE fields of interest. It
is a source of pride to become an IEEE Fellow, and people strive
for many years to get it.
Reibman says the official benefits of becoming a Fellow
include receiving recognition for doing a good job and making
an extraordinary technical contribution to society. But unofficially, other benefits come from the bragging rights and credibility a Fellow brings to a group, project, or even himself or herself.
"Companies like to see that they employ a number of IEEE
Fellows," she explains. "They can advertise and demonstrate that
they employ the best, brightest top movers and shakers and give
customers confidence about their work staff. Academic department heads like to see Fellows advertised on their department
website as a way to improve the stature of their department.
Plus, listing it as an important accomplishment on a resume
makes individuals more employable if they want to change fields.
The Department of Bioengineering at McGill University invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position. McGill
University is a leading research-intensive academic institution in Canada, attracting over one-half billion dollars in
competitive research funding each year. The position is
preferably at the Assistant Professor level, but outstanding senior candidates are also encouraged to apply. Rank
will be determined by the qualifications of the successful
applicant, and salary will be commensurate with rank and
experience. The Department is in a rapid growth phase,
and has recently established an undergraduate major in
Bioengineering and commissioned extensive new research
facilities. The successful candidate will play a leading role
in this growth, while maintaining McGill's international reputation of excellence in research and teaching.
We are seeking outstanding candidates whose research
programs will complement current strengths in biomanufacturing, computational and systems biology, biological
materials, microfluidics, and single molecule biophysics.
Research areas of special interest include the development
of novel tools for biomedical diagnostics and characterization of biomolecules (e.g. lab-on-a-chip, biosensors, and
micro- and nano-arrays, etc.).
The Department is committed to excellence in teaching and
values service contributions of its Faculty members to the
University, the profession, and society at large.
Candidates must have a Ph.D., with a strong preference
for a first degree in engineering. Evidence of exceptional
research achievements, or research potential, is indispensable. Successful candidates will have a strong commitment
to the mission of the University, through outstanding activities in the areas of research, teaching, and service. Membership or eligibility for membership in a Canadian professional engineering association is required.
