Misinformation on the internet can lead to
common mistakes in the world of DTG printing.
I
start many of my classes and seminars joking that I discovered not
everything on the internet is true.
Everyone laughs because they
know about the frequent spread of misinformation online. Still, so many garment
decorators (or soon-to-be garment decorators) go to forums, Facebook groups
and other social media outlets for directto-garment (DTG) knowledge. Don't
get me wrong, the internet offers great
information. But if you are new to DTG
printing, it's difficult to separate the good
from the bad.
For the purposes of this article, we'll
be talking about DTG printers costing
$50,000 and less.
PAINT ROLLERS, SQUEEGEES
AND BRUSHES AFTER
PRETREATMENT
You'll see statements such as, "After
applying pretreatment, use a paint roller

to smooth and spread it evenly across
the fabric." Sometimes it's a paint brush
or some type of squeegee being recommended to smooth and spread applied
pretreatment. Th is is a bandage to fi x
the issue of uneven pretreatment laydown due to improper technique or
faulty equipment. Using a proper method
should result in an even laydown without
additional steps or processes.
ANY PRETREATMENT SOLUTION
APPLICATION WILL WORK
There are proper and improper pretreatment methods. The ones to avoid include
applying pretreatment using a paint roller
or pump spray bottle, which can be found
at a hardware store. Paint rollers apply
far too much pretreatmentk and result in
wasted solution being poured down the
drain as you clean the roller each time.
Pump spray bottles will result in inconsistent laydown of solution on the garment
that you will see in the fi nished print as
bright and dull areas in the image.
The most consistent method is to use an
automatic pretreatment machine ranging
in cost between $2,000 and $5,000. If an
automatic pretreatment machine is out
of your budget, a $75 hand-held power
paint sprayer will do the job. A warning
on paint sprayers: The process is messy,
sticky, and people tend to use too much
pretreatment when hand spraying.
PRINT EVERYDAY
Th is is a sometimes "Yes" and sometimes
"No" piece of internet advice. Machines
that are built from repurposed paper
printers (converted desktop printers)
need to keep the inks moving to avoid
head clogging. If you're not sure about
whether this applies, ask to see the print
driver for the DTG machine you're interested in buying. Th is will reveal whether
it originally was a desktop paper printer.
