Your Customer
Needs to Know You
This is called "brand awareness." Who are you and why should
customers even spend five minutes talking to you?
A great way to build some "street cred" in this arena is with
videos. Show how easy it is to work with you or how your design
process is different than anyone else. Can you demonstrate your
competence? Videos make it easy.
Also, on the point of "getting to know you," are you present in
the community or in any associations in which your customers may
participate on a regular basis? Remember, nobody does business with
their enemies, but plenty of people do business with their friends.
Awareness is the result of being present, accounted for and seen.
This means it pays to get out of your shop.
Liking You
In the sales cycle, customers need to like what you're doing after they
have noticed you. Social media is great for this, as are newsletters
and automated email campaigns. In many shops, owners frequently
lament that they don't have time to create customer-facing content
that displays the shop in the best light.
Just as frequently, however, shop owners complain about the lack
of sales in this industry's feast-or-famine cycle. For the athletic
market, can you create content that best illustrates how you are
solving problems for customers?
In the aforementioned example, the CrossFit gym owner and
athletic director had different challenges. Can you create content
that demonstrates how your shop can solve those problems? Better
yet, can you get successful CrossFit gym owners or athletic directors to give testimonials on your behalf ? Nothing can get others
to like you quite like members of their "tribe" talking about how
great you are.
